May 15 11:00AM-3:00PM Picnic in the Park (Wilcox Park) Eastown kicks off the 2010 special events season with the fourth annual Wilcox Picnic in the Park. This year, they are teaming up with Friends of G.R. Parks for a morning Wilcox Park Cleanup followed by the Picnic in the Park. Everybody who helps clean up the park gets a free hot dog, chips and a pop as a thank you. This is a family friendly event with live acoustic music, children play activities, and informational booths.

May 15 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM (Grandville) Safe for Summer Swim Days, Visser Family YMCA
Find out if your child has the skills they need to be safe in the water this summer!  The Y will offer free swim tests to any child in the community (You do not have to be a member.). Administered in the water by a certified YMCA aquatics instructor, the tests are designed to test whether a swimmer has the skills necessary to swim on their own without adult supervision. Drowning remains one of the leading causes of death and injury among youth under the age of 14.

May 31 11:00 AM and 1:30 PM Coopersville Rail Road Troop Train – Free for vets, everyone else over 2 years old is $7.50 (it’s usually $10.50).
June 1 6:00-7:00PM Summer Reading Kickoff Party. Celebrate the official start of summer reading. Enjoy face painting and free cake in the children’s department of Barnes & Noble (Woodland Mall, 3195-28th St.SE, Grand Rapids).
June 3 7:00 PM Getting Kids Out of the Jello (and other mishaps). Dan Hodgins is a great speaker. Go listen to him at the Main Library. He’ll discuss the importance of reading and strategies in dealing with bedtime, toileting, money, chores, sibling fighting, and much more. Co-sponsored by the Great Start Parent Coalition.
