I’ve written before about Bright Beginnings, so it’s not a surprise that I look forward to visits from our Parent Educator. She brings a bag full of fun every time, but the last two times she brought a bag full of mess.
I prefer the playgroups, where kids make huge messes for an hour, have a snack, and then leave with 11 pieces of construction paper glued together with stickers and paint on both sides. I am not as fond of messy crafts when they come into my house.
Last month, she brought shaving cream and these scraper things. I have a special ‘craft’ tablecloth and I have just started setting it out before she comes. It turned out to be really fun. We did it again over Spring Break, although I have to admit I didn’t ask my kids to spell the alphabet in the shaving cream – I just squirted a bunch on the table and went to unload the dishwasher.
Yes, they were wearing identical shirts. I don’t know how or why that happened.
Today, she brought three different concoctions. One was milk, food coloring, and dishwashing liquid. It was kind of cool, but the really fun one was liquid starch mixed with Elmer’s glue. It is kind of like Silly Putty, and A.P. discovered that it bounces.
The messy messy messy one from today is corn starch and water. It has a weird consistency and is just fun to play with. It’s a horrible mess though, and I had to vacuum again afterward, and clean the bathroom sink too. I let Maybelle show A.P. how to make it when he came home from school, and she added a bunch of food coloring to make a really disgusting goop.
That sweatshirt and apron are in the washing machine right now, as a matter of fact. They are really gross. Once a month, though, I can deal with it.
