When I was growing up, my parents made these elaborate Halloween costumes. Hand made, like with a pattern and sewing machine, and paper mâché heads that slipped on, made weeks before. Incredible. Even more incredible, I got absolutely none of the genes that made my parents do that.
I am lame at Halloween. My husband finally called me out on it this year. I said it just isn’t important to me. He said, “Well, it is to our kids”. OK. Fortunately, my Silly Sister In Law gave me a costume that is far and away better than what I would have come up with for Maybelle, and we will get A.P. suited up in something snazzy too.

I also put up a nice big button in my sidebar, just to show what a big effort I am making. I think all this extra energy I am putting into Halloween this year definitely deserves lots and lots of extra candy, don’t you?
My mom always made our costumes for Halloween. The most unforgettable one… a California raisin. My brother and I were both raisins. We had huge brown costumes, white gloves and a microphone. I was mortified but I won an award for most unique costume.
Yeah, my mom made mine too. She did a lot of things better than me. But I cook and she doesn’t. So that counts for something right?
When I was little , we only got the cheap store costumes with the masks that broke before you even walked out the door. Since I too have no desire to disappoint my children, we don’t do costumes. 1. Because I am not crafty like your parents; 2. Because I don’t want them to be disappointed with broken store bought costumes. I’d rather just give them candy and skip the disappointment! I know, I am such a boring Mom!!
I have lofty ambitions to make elaborate costumes, but we always end up with the cheap store bought costumes.
