Imagine… in just a few weeks it will be warm, and hopefully we will all have that nice summer-y relaxed feeling. In keeping with the “stay-cation” idea the Michigan Board of Tourism hopes we all adopt this summer, I bring to you the Third Annual Great American Backyard Campout. It doesn’t get much more local than your backyard.
This year, it takes place on June 27, which is about as early in the year it is warm enough to sleep outside ’round here. I love this idea – and we bought a mammoth tent that barely fits in our little city-lot backyard. I found some very cool night-time activities to do with kids; here is a link. We can sit on the back porch and eat our s’mores and Jiffy Pop I make on the stove. Plus, no public bathrooms to deal with. This is camping even the least rugged among us can deal with.
But don’t just take my word for it. Being outside is such a rare experience for children there is a movement to combat ”Nature Deficit Disorder“. Even the president took some time out of dealing with loony dictators and the disaster that is our economy to proclaim June as Great Outdoors Month.
So what do you say? Anyone else in?
