Oh my goodness, another snow day. I am out of back-up plans. We have camped out in the living room, made a pumpkin pie, mock-rocked to the new Foo Fighters album about 50 times, and played “Ninja Warrior”. Enough.
I’m out of ideas and I give up. I asked A.P. what he wanted to do with the day and he said, very quickly, “Go to St. Louis”! Considering we probably couldn’t even get out to 28th Street at this point I doubt that is going to happen. So my kids are watching what is going to be the first of about 100 hours of TV today. PBS and videos of course; I don’t want another Totinos Pizza Rolls incident. 3inunder3 had a similar experience with Marshmallow Power.
In addition to abdicating parental entertainment responsibility, I hereby turn my blog over to my Dad, who has a good frugal tip for you (the corned beef he made was delicious, by the way). If you want more, cruise over for a visit to my buddy at The Diaper Diaries. She always puts some good money saving tip up for “Frugal Fridays”. Thanks to PBS, Dad, and Jill for making my day easy.

Every once in a while I read about a recipe in the newspaper or see it on the food channel, and it seems so good I decide to try it. Once upon a time the meat was the most expensive ingredient. Lately it has been the spices. I have juniper berries, white ground pepper and beau monde seasoning, none of which I use regularly, nor may ever use again. I was surprised to walk into Walgreens and see their selection of spices. Maybe they don’t have everything that I need, but they are cheap. Sometimes, even, they are two for the price of one. They have the everyday spices at an incredibly low price.
I needed bay leaves for corned beef at Christmas. I bought them at the local grocery for $5.99. The Walgreens price, later the same day was under $2.00. Possibly the spices aren’t the same quality as those from Spice Islands or Morton & Bassett, but they do the job. Try them, them, and if a little bit flat, toss in a little more.
I saw Martha Stewart say that alll spices should be rotated every six months. Martha can afford that, but I can’t. If a spice looks a little dusty, I just add more. I’ve never felt that a spice has lost all of its efficacy.

Have you seen the price of chicken lately? Why does eating healthier cost 80 bizzilion times more? I can feed a family of five at McD’s for like $10.
oh, I am a young frugal jedi at best. You are my Yoda
I am also not nearly as nerdy as the comment makes me sound.
